Business Development stream

Business Development Skills

Built on the evidence that conventional classroom business training produces small gains, while training that builds proactive initiative, simplifies financial practice into usable rules and ends in a lender-ready file produces substantially larger ones.

Syllabus

Five subject units

Units one to three are covered in the guided week online; units four and five at the centre in Lafia.

Units one to three — the guided week online, 7–13 September 2026

  1. Unit one Online, on this platform

Personal initiative and the proactive owner

Self-starting, future orientation and persistence as trainable business behaviours rather than personality; identifying an opportunity in the participant’s own market and testing it against demand; anticipating obstacles and preparing a second and third response before the first fails; financial bootstrapping, meaning growth funded from within the business before any external credit is sought; goal setting with a dated action plan that each participant leaves the day holding.

  2. Unit two Online, on this platform

Customer, market and the marketable offer

Who the customer actually is and what she is choosing between; competitor observation as a field exercise in the local market; product and service differentiation, the practice with the strongest measured return in this literature; pricing from cost rather than from imitation; quality, packaging and presentation standards for goods sold into the Abuja corridor; supplier negotiation, bulk purchase and cooperative buying.

  3. Unit three Online, on this platform

    Business money rules and records

Separating business money from household money, taught as a fixed rule rather than as bookkeeping theory; the owner’s salary; a single daily record of money in, money out and stock; the change and float rule; simple stock control and knowing which line earns; digital payments, POS and agent banking as both a payment method and a record; reading a month from one’s own figures and acting on it.

Units four and five — at the centre, 14–15 September 2026

  1. Unit four In person, in Lafia

Formalisation, credit and the lender’s file

What registration is for and, candidly, when it does not pay; the Corporate Affairs Commission process, current statutory fees and the choice between a business name and a company; National Identification Number, Bank Verification Number and Tax Identification Number; opening and operating a business bank account; the documents every Nigerian enterprise fund actually demands, worked against the live instruments available in the State; cooperative and savings-group formation, and how a group record substitutes for a bank statement the applicant does not have.

  2. Unit five In person, in Lafia

Applied practice, growth plan and cluster constitution

Supervised full-day practical in which each participant completes a costed enterprise plan for a real business, not a hypothetical one; a market-day field exercise testing the offer with actual customers and returning with the result; presentation and defence of the plan before peers and facilitators; competency assessment against which certification is issued; constitution of business clusters and savings groups for post-training support.

Places and support

Who this stream is for, and what follows it

Priority criteria decide who is shortlisted; enablement is what the programme provides after the training itself.

Eligibility

Priority is given to

  • Priority to existing micro-enterprise operators, market traders and artisans with a trading activity
  • Cooperative members with a demonstrated business idea
  • Nominees not already selected for another stream, so that the 1,500 are 1,500 distinct individuals

Nominees are drawn from all thirteen Local Government Areas, and not less than 50 per cent of the places in this stream are held for women, youth and persons living with disabilities. A nominee may hold a place in one stream only.

Enablement

What follows the training

Merit-awarded working-asset packages specified against the graduate’s assessed plan, cluster savings and lending groups constituted before graduation, and targeted formalisation support for graduates whose plan requires registration.

Graduates of every stream may also enter the pitch competition on the closing day, where winning ventures receive seed grants at the graduation ceremony.

After graduation

Months 2–5 — Structured follow-up

Each enterprise receives four monthly follow-up visits from its facilitator, of approximately three hours, to resolve implementation problems and hold the participant to the action plan set on Day 1. The follow-up is part of the training protocol that produced the measured result, not an optional extension.

Cohort

When this stream runs

One cohort, drawn from every Local Government Area, training at a single centre in Lafia.
